Writing residency, Siteworks Brunswick

Writing residency, Siteworks Brunswick

The following is the first text produced as part of my allocation as writer-in-residence for Moreland City Council managed community creative space Siteworks. Poems are published fortnightly here: http://www.saxonstreet.com/writingsiteworks/

This poem reflects on the site's mixed history as having previously housed two Catholic schools, and reflects upon my own sensory experience and memories with the Church as part of my religious upbringing in a large Irish-Catholic family in Queensland. In this work I attempt to articulate the impending institutional feeling present at my residency space and how this feeling can remain present long after an institution leaves an architectural site or space. Here I utilise the arguably pervasive aesthetics of lined notebooks, texta-drawn objects and cut-and-paste craft to emphasise ideas of memory and school.
